Lessons from the Pura community biogas project, Energy for Sustainable Development l Volume VIII No. 3 l September 2004      

Based on almost a decade of experience with the community biogas plant project in Pura village (South India), an overview is presented of the lessons  learned and the challenges for the reliability of such systems. An indication is given of the long-term sustainability of such rural energy systems.

Biogas Electricity For PURA Village, Biogas electricity- Pura village case study; S.Jayakumar and Amulya;

A decentralized biogas electricity system has been established at Pura village as an alternative for providing rural electricity.  Since September 1987, the traditional system of obtaining water, illumination and fertilizer in Pura village (South India) has been replaced with a community biogas plant electricity generation system.  The technical, management and economic aspects of this system are the subject matter of the present paper. (Paper is not included in this version).

Energy Technologies and Policies for Rural Development, Based on the presentation at the Second Meeting of the Global Forum on Sustainable Energy on 28 November 2001 at the International Institute for Systems Analysis, Luxemburg, Austria, and on the paper " Rural Energy:  Goals, Strategies and Policies", EPW, Volume XXXIV, Number 49, December 4, 1999, pp 3455-3445.

Amulya explains his approach: the goal for rural energy systems is that they must be instruments of sustainable rural development. Rural energy systems, therefore, must advance rural economic growth that is economically efficient, need-oriented and equitable, self-reliant and empowering, and environmentally sound.

 Rural energy systems have become an abandoned priority. Amulya traces the progress in rural energy and suggests an approach with the goal that they become instruments of sustainable rural development.

Based on the  experience gained in Pura village near Bangalore, Amulya says that similar Rural Energy and Water Supply Systems can be replicated in about 100 villages, to start with.

Some Reflections On Rural Energy Issues,

Some reflections on rural energy issues, 1990. Based on ASTRA and KSCSTC experiences, Amulya says: for a `technological solution' to be accepted into the matrix of society, it has to satisfy vital non-technical social criteria. Rural energy systems, therefore, must be society-specific and culture-specific. There cannot be standard designs and packages for universal application.
